Originally trained as a classical pianist in Costa Rica, Sofi has transformed her academic background into a deeply personal sound world she only began exploring a few years ago. Silent Stories — the debut release of Ólafur Arnalds’ OPIA Community label — becomes her way of translating emotion into sound.
During her residency at Bosco Studio, Sofi lived simply, mainly practicing and often preparing one of her favorite childhood dishes: tomatoes with lemon juice and salt. Though now based in Berlin, she keeps her roots alive through her music — a bridge between memory, distance, and home.

Sofi stands where classical training meets emotional rawness and modern minimalism. Her music often begins with meticulously crafted piano lines that reveal her classical roots: precise phrasing, elegant voicings, and a refined touch. But she deliberately lets imperfection breathe through — the felt hammers, the pedal noise, even her soft humming — turning the piano into something almost human.
What makes her distinctive is how she balances form and fragility. You can hear echoes of Debussy or Chopin in her harmonic choices, yet she places them in a space closer to contemporary ambient or cinematic music — think Nils Frahm or Hania Rani, but with a more intimate, introspective edge.
Her compositions rarely aim for grandeur; they’re more like quiet conversations. Each piece feels like a memory she’s trying not to lose — shaped by silence as much as by sound. The result is a kind of emotional transparency that bridges her classical discipline with a modern, emotionally open language.
