Today I'm back in Spitalfields, East London at one of my favourite places. I'm on Princelet Street, which is one of Spitalfield's iconic streets. The street was built around the 1720s, and housed Hugenot Silk Weavers and owners of Truman Brewery. Its fortunes worsened in the late 19th century when it became a slum for Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe.
Today, these houses have been loving restored by various conservation groups, that include Dan Cruickshank and the late, great Dennis Severs. These are now 5m+ properties!!
This is MY London, and it falls within the shadow of Christ Church Spitalfields, where the spirit of Nicholas Hawksmoor lives on!
I love it here, though some feel it still has a dark and foreboding spirit, as if the Ripper murders will never leave this place in peace. What do you think?
