I travelled 13 hours across Peru then 7 hours through the mountains, all so I could potentially see endangered Andean Condors at Colca Canyon. I had already been told it was less likely this time of year....but I knew people that had seen them recently, so I stayed positive.
Donning my backpack, camera and map I explore and hike to several places known for the condor sightings and sit for hours, bird watching, hoping for a glimpse of one. The scenery is stunning but I've come here with one goal in mind!
Will my Condor dream become a reality? Watch 'My Search For Andean Condors' to find out.
Andean Condor Facts:
An Andean Condor’s wingspan can reach up to 3.2 meters and it is the largest raptor in the world. Like all vultures they scavenge for their food and eat primarily dead carcasses. They are located in the Andean Mountain range of South America where the birds are increasingly rare. The Andean Condor now listed as “Near Threatened” on the IUCN Red List. Sadly this is due to aggressive hunting, poisoning from pesticides, habitat destruction, inadequate food supply (carrion is used to make dog food), sport hunting and capture for use in rituals.
A current threat to the survival of these beautiful birds – that all tourists need to be aware of – is the trend to capture or hunt and kill condors in order to obtain feathers to sell in markets such as in Cusco, Peru. Illegal yet an active practice that exists because those who are uniformed or simply don’t care about the animals welfare puchase the items and law enforcement refuses to enforce existing laws.
I got to take home a more cherishable souvenir – up close photos and videos of the birds living free amongst the cliffs of the Condor Canyon.
