The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 takes place at Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh, at the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers (Triveni Sangam). It commences on 13 January 2025 (Paush Purnima) and continues until 26 February 2025 (Maha Shivratri).

This gathering is held every 12 years at the site, and considered especially auspicious due to a rare celestial alignment—is a momentous occasion for devotees and travellers alike.

📖 History & Importance
The Kumbh Mela is rooted in the legend of the Samudra Manthan—the cosmic ocean-churning—during which drops of amrita (nectar of immortality) are said to have fallen at four holy sites, including Prayagraj.

It is believed that taking a sacred dip in the river(s) during Kumbh bathing dates cleanses sins and may lead to moksha (liberation).

For 2025, the festival is flagged as the “Maha” Kumbh, because this configuration (sun, moon, Jupiter in particular zodiac positions) recurs only after very long intervals.

Beyond spirituality, the Kumbh Mela showcases India’s cultural, logistical and communal strengths from massive temporary infrastructure to crowd management and heritage celebration.

🕉 Ghats & Ritual Bathing Locations
The ritual bathing (snan) during Kumbh takes place at many ghats along the rivers in Prayagraj. Here are some of the prominent ones:
Triveni Sangam Ghat: The central confluence point of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati; the most sacred bathing site.

Dashashwamedh Ghat: Steeped in Vedic ritual tradition, named after ten Ashwamedha yajnas.

Kila Ghat: Located near the historic Akbar Fort, this ghat offers a serene setting for ritual and reflection.

Rasulabad Ghat: Along the Ganga, known for its quieter environment and ancestral rites (shraddha).

Saraswati Ghat: Dedicated to the mythical Saraswati River; considered spiritually potent.

Additional ghats being revitalised for 2025 include: Balua Ghat, Kalighat, Chhatnag Ghat, Purana Arail Ghat, Maujgiri Ghat, Nageshwar Ghat.

During the Kumbh, these ghats are equipped with temporary infrastructure such as changing rooms, drinking-water facilities, benches and sanitation blocks to accommodate millions.
