Philosophy for a capstone course.
A capstone is like a final "big project" that helps students wrap up everything they’ve learned before they graduate. The Four Big Rules for a project to count as a capstone:
i. Breadth: Students must use what they learned from many different classes.
ii. Integration: They have to mix different skills and knowledge together into one big experience.
iii. Application: Students must use their skills to study a real problem and create a final result.
iv. Transition: The project should help students get ready to move from college into their future careers.
By the end of this class, students should be able to:
Find and describe a current problem in science and medicine. Look at research literature as a source of information for taking a position on the topic.
Become better writers and explain their ideas clearly to others. Analyze how other people write to figure out who they are talking to and why.
Students will look at a "hot topics" of their choice and read around it. They will show in different ways (not just tests) including but not limited to scholarly presentations, a video or in person presentation, a World Cafe Method to create dialogue around a topic of interest etc.
