Walkthrough of the strategy game Defender of the Crown, released in 1986 on Amiga by Cinemaware and later ported to Atari ST, PC, C64, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum, Nes, Mac and Apple IIGS.

It was shortly after its release on Atari that I picked up the game via a compilation also with Captain Blood, all in a backpack called Atari Bag. First encounter with a game completely in English when I had not even entered college, I would have learned the language of Shakespeare with words such as Castle, Knight, Raiding and of course Robin Hood.

The game is simply magnificent and the use of the color palette of the ST does not have to be ashamed of its eternal enemy. The soundtrack is also particularly inspired but which puts this version at the top of the pile of adaptations and without a doubt the good initial ideas that had remained at this stage. Thus, now, you can choose your projectiles to besiege a castle and put in place a strategy to decimate the ranks of the opponent. Similarly, we can really study the cost of land, the level of hostility of the various opponents and thus guess, in which order struck. From a game with an exceptional achievement originally on Atari, it also becomes a real strategy game, that's the magic of Cinemaware.

C'est peu de temps après sa sortie sur Atari que j'ai récupéré le jeu via une compilation avec également Captain Blood, le tout dans un sac à dos qui s'appelait Atari Bag. Première rencontre avec un jeu totalement en Anglais alors que je n'étais pas même entré au collège, j'aurais ainsi appris la langue de Shakespeare avec des mots tels que Castle, Knight, Raiding et bien entendu Robin Hood.

Le jeu est tout bonnement magnifique et l'utilisation de la palette de couleur du ST n'a pas à rougir de son ennemi de toujours. La bande son est elle aussi particulièrement inspirée mais ce qui place cette version en haut de la pile des adaptations et sans nul doute possible les bonnes idées de départ qui étaient restées à ce stade. Ainsi, désormais, on peut choisir ses projectiles pour assiéger un château et mettre en place une stratégie pour décimer les rangs chez l'adversaire. De même, on peut vraiment étudier le coût des terres, le niveau d'hostilité des différents adverses et ainsi deviner, dans quel ordre frapper. D'un jeu à la réalisation exceptionnelle à l'origine, sur Atari, devient en plus un vrai jeu de stratégie, c'est ça la magie Cinemaware.
