Between the 1940s and 1970s, Portugal saw the widespread use of British light vans, which played a crucial role in transporting goods and providing various services. Models from brands such as Austin, Morris, Commer, Bedford, Fordson, Ford, and Mini became a common sight on Portuguese roads, known for their robustness and versatility.
Bedford, a subsidiary of Vauxhall, stood out with models like the Bedford CA and later the CF. The Bedford CA, launched in 1952, was known for its short nose and engine mounted between the front seats, offering good performance for its time. The later Bedford CF became one of the most popular vans in the UK and was widely used in Portugal by public services and as a base for camper vans.
Morris introduced the Minor Van in 1953, a commercial version of the popular Morris Minor. This model was widely used in Portugal for deliveries and service purposes, valued for its reliability and fuel efficiency.
Austin contributed with models such as the Austin Ten, which, after World War II, was adapted for civilian use, including pick-up and van versions. These vehicles were essential for small businesses and local services across Portugal.
The Mini, launched in 1959 by the British Motor Corporation, also had commercial versions such as the Mini Van and the Mini Moke. The Mini Van, built on the Traveller’s chassis, was an economical option for small business owners, while the Mini Moke, originally designed for military use, found popularity in recreational and tourist settings.
These British light vans not only supported Portugal’s economic development by facilitating the transport of goods and services, but also left a lasting cultural legacy, still fondly remembered by many today.
