Why do cars have to be scrapped after a certain number of years? While buying a vehicle is easy, scrapping it responsibly is far more complex—and increasingly important. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has introduced new national guidelines aiming for a 95% recycling rate by 2025, including the reuse of at least 5% of key components. These ambitious goals reflect China's broader push toward green, low-carbon development in the automotive industry.

With over 395 million vehicles now on Chinese roads, the country is facing a surge in end-of-life vehicles. To prevent environmental damage and resource waste, China is transforming its scrappage and recycling processes—from crude dismantling to high-efficiency, automated recycling plants. These facilities recover valuable materials like steel, aluminum, plastics, and rubber, reducing pollution while feeding the circular economy.

Illegal black-market recycling, once dominant due to higher payouts, is now being replaced by legitimate, regulated operations backed by updated laws and financial incentives. The evolution includes the remanufacturing of components like engines and transmissions, supporting sustainability and resource reuse. New technologies, including AI-powered automation, are expected to further optimize dismantling processes and reduce labor costs.

China is also implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), holding manufacturers accountable throughout the vehicle lifecycle—from eco-design to post-use recycling. These shifts not only lower emissions but also drive innovation and competitiveness in the auto sector.

As China advances toward its 2025 targets, the scrappage of cars is no longer just about disposal—it’s about environmental stewardship, economic opportunity, and a sustainable automotive future.
