Death Angel — The Dream Calls for Blood, Live in Pilsen (June 8, 2025, Metalfest Open Air)

Death Angel is an American thrash metal band formed in Daly City, California, in 1982 by cousins Rob Cavestany (lead guitar), Dennis Pepa (bass, vocals), Gus Pepa (rhythm guitar), and Andy Galeon (drums), all of Filipino descent. Mark Osegueda joined as lead vocalist in 1984, solidifying their lineup. A key player in the Bay Area thrash metal scene, they’re recognized as one of the “Big Eight” thrash bands alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. Known for their technical prowess and fast, complex arrangements, they released their debut album, The Ultra-Violence (1987), when drummer Galeon was just 14, selling 40,000 copies in four months. They followed with Frolic Through the Park (1988) and Act III (1990), blending thrash with diverse influences like funk and melodic elements. After a bus accident in 1990 injured Galeon, the band split, reforming in 2001 for a benefit concert. They’ve since released six more albums, including Humanicide (2019), which earned a Grammy nomination, and are working on a tenth album for 2025.

Death Angel’s The Dream Calls for Blood is the title track from their seventh studio album, released on October 11, 2013, via Nuclear Blast. This thrash metal anthem, written by guitarist Rob Cavestany (music) and vocalist Mark Osegueda (lyrics), embodies the band’s relentless energy and Bay Area thrash roots. The song’s aggressive riffs, blistering solos, and Osegueda’s raw, defiant vocals drive its intense narrative of breaking free from oppression and pursuing dreams through sacrifice. Lyrics like “The dream calls for blood / And you’ve not spilled enough” reflect a metaphor for the band’s perseverance and the hard work behind their music, as Cavestany described the title as their “motto” for the band’s journey. The track’s vicious pace and heavy production by Jason Suecof make it a standout, praised for its in-your-face thrash assault and memorable chorus. A lyric video featuring blood-soaked visuals was released in 2013, amplifying its visceral impact.
