What were the main stages of the First Crusade ?

As Jerusalem fell into the hands of the Seljuk Turks, preventing the smooth running of pilgrimages for Christians, the Byzantine Emperor Alexis I asked for help from Pope Urban II in order to face the Muslims. In November 1095, a solemn appeal was made to the European knights to go and deliver the holy places and help the Christians of the East. The West took up arms. Let us return to this major fact of the Middle Ages, by observing the great stages which led the Westerners to establish themselves on Muslim land.
