Fred Dinenage looks back over the disturbing life of John Straffen, one of Britain’s most notorious child murderers. At just 21 years old, Straffen strangled two young girls but avoided the hangman’s noose after being deemed mentally impaired, with an IQ of only 58.
Committed to Broadmoor Hospital, Straffen escaped after just six months and went on to murder a third young girl in a nearby village. This time, the justice system responded decisively. Straffen was transferred to maximum-security prisons, where he would remain for the rest of his life.

John Straffen died behind bars in 2007, still holding the grim distinction of being Britain’s longest-serving prisoner.
