This unique tradition is considered one of the largest vegetarian feasts in India, with the season running from mid-July to early October.
Temple and Tradition:
The event takes place at the Sree Parthasarathy Temple in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala.
It is a ritualistic feast, not a casual one, and is believed to be around 1,800 years old.
The Feast:
It is a lavish vegetarian meal featuring a vast number of dishes, with some sources mentioning up to 64. The food is served on plantain leaves.
The Ritual:
The "Vallasadya" is a ritual that involves the oarsmen of the snake boats, known as Palliyodams.
They arrive at the temple in their boats and sing Vanchipattu (boat songs) to request specific dishes from the feast.
Every requested dish must be served without a refusal.
Significance:
The tradition is believed to be based on a legend where Lord Krishna, in disguise, asked for the dishes to be served.
It is also connected to the annual Aranmula Snake Boat Race, with the feast happening around the same time.
