Shooting Games and Genre Standard Controls

Back in the day, particularly the mid-90s and early 2000s, video game controls had more variation from game to game. And I'm not just talking about what you do in the game, I'm talking about the actual buttons on the controller, and what action was tied to which input. This video doesn't pertain to mouse and keyboard, but that might be worth its own video. When gaming fully entered its three-dimensional era, controllers required more buttons than ever. But one other thing that's happened in that period, is the rise of what I call “genre-standard controls.” Why did every game with shooting adopt more or less the same control scheme as the default?
