This video is a demonstration of an exercise that helps process grief and trauma by using the creative process. I explain how I am able express myself through the use of intention setting, art making with available materials, and witness (a.k.a. stream of consciousness) writing - even when words fail me.
Process art is the act of creating art and staying focused on the process itself (versus the outcome of the painting or drawing). Creating art focused on intuitive choices of color, shape, and movement keeps me present and attuned to what is happening right now - not ruminating on the past or anxious about the future. It is a simple, accessible way to promote positive mental health, lower anxiety, and ease depression. Besides the self care aspects, it's also a fun way to create with zero pressure to perform. The act of creating is the goal. If it turns out beautiful too, it's the cherry on top.
INTENTION is a statement of what I want or need, but it is written as if I have already achieved it. "I am calm" instead of "I want to be calm", for example.
WITNESS WRITING is a way to listen to the version of myself that is so often crowded out by the business of everyday life, social media, and Netflix. Non-stop, stream of consciousness writing for a given time period - often only 5-10 minutes.
