In the 18th century, many Serenades were composed as music to be played at outdoor soirées, that is, as light and comfortable music to be played while people were drinking and chatting. A small band of standing musicians would enter with a march, play a few pieces, and then leave with a march. In later periods, serenades were composed as concert pieces. Diabelli's Serenade, written in the early 19th century, also has March in the first movement and Polonaise in the fourth movement, which is derived from a Polish nobleman's march, and Adagio and Minuet in the middle movements.
It is filled with an enjoyable atmosphere reminiscent of the soirées of past days.

18世紀、野外で開かれる夜会の席で演奏するための音楽として、すなわち、お酒を酌み交わし、談笑する人々の傍らで奏でられる、軽く、聴き心地のよい音楽としてセレナーデが多く書かれました。立奏で演奏する小編成の楽隊が、行進曲を奏でながら入場し、何曲か演奏したのちに行進曲で退場していくという形をセレナーデは取ります。後の時代になるとセレナーデは演奏会用の作品として書かれるようになりますが、19世紀初頭に書かれたディアベリのセレナーデも、第１曲はマーチ、そして終曲の第４曲はポーランドの貴族の行進曲に由来するポロネースで終わり、間に挟まれたアダジオ、メヌエットと共に、往時の夜会を思い起こさせるような楽しい雰囲気に溢れています。
