From Small Things: Episode 33: Cooling Down & Catching Up

Welcome back!

After some high summer temperatures here, I've gotten back to work in my sewing room and have some good progress to share this week.

First, I have made progress on the small Dresden Plate throw quilt for my friend Sue. I added flying geese borders on two edges to make it longer, found a sheet that would work for backing, and got this one basted.

It also seemed like a good idea to keep working with those Dresden blades while they were out on my table; if I put them away, they may not be found for years! So I pieced together some of the blues into quarter-circles, and am not sure yet how I will use them in the end-- but I know they will be used now, and I have some ideas!

I've also just begun work on making three pillows out of shirts which belonged to my friend's late husband. I removed buttons and cut them up; the next step will be to fix them to interfacing and start some piecing. I'm going to keep the pattern simple, and just stick with squares.

As far as hand quilting, my progress has picked up a bit with the cooling temperatures. I am currently working on my jellyroll/embroidery block quilt. I'm putting a crosshatch pattern on all the jellyroll blocks, and quilting each embroidery block with a different pattern. I have another week or two of work left on this one.

A few weeks ago, I got to meet up with a local quilter who I met through this channel! Her name is Linda, and she is a very skilled quilter involved with our local historical preservation groups. We met up through our mutual friend Toby, who was kind enough to host us and make us a wonderful lunch. Of course, we had a show-and-tell! Linda brought some of the quilts she has made, which were absolutely gorgeous; I shared a few newer ones, which you all have seen already; and Toby shared some from her collection-- some vintage quilts, and some she purchased from me. I hope you enjoy having a look at all of these goodies! It was such a nice afternoon, and wonderful to make a new friend.

Lastly, I did end up adding a binding to my Cathedral Windows wall hanging, and will share the finished product and what the process was like for me. I'm very happy with the end result!
