Raising baby goats (kids) requires proper nutrition, warmth, and care to ensure healthy growth. Colostrum is essential within the first 6 hours after birth, as it provides antibodies to build immunity. If the mother isn’t nursing, a high-quality colostrum replacer is necessary. For feeding, kids can either nurse naturally or be bottle-fed with goat milk or a milk replacer. Newborns need to be fed every 3-4 hours, and by 2-3 weeks, they should start nibbling on hay and grain to develop their rumen. By 8 weeks, they can be weaned off milk.
Proper shelter is crucial—kids should be kept in a dry, draft-free area with clean bedding like straw or shavings. In colder weather, heat lamps or blankets can help prevent chilling. Regular health care is also important; the umbilical cord should be dipped in iodine at birth to prevent infections. Deworming can start around 3-4 weeks if needed, and CD&T vaccinations should be given at 4-6 weeks with a booster later. Watch for signs of illness, such as diarrhea (scours), bloating, or lethargy, as early treatment is crucial.
Socialization is key—handling the kids daily makes them friendly and easy to manage. Goats are herd animals, so they need companions to stay happy and stress-free. Ensure they always have access to fresh water and a balanced diet. With proper care, baby goats grow into strong, healthy animals.
