Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov wrote Mariel (1999) in memory of his friend Mariel Stubrin, attempting, in Golijov's words, “to capture that short instant before grief.” The piece reverberates with echoes of Brazilian music that Stubrin loved, drawing bottomless emotion from the textural interaction of cello and marimba.
Recorded live in Alice Tully Hall on March 17, 2023
