I have looked into selling musical services of various descriptions, one of these is getting songs and music published. I am still very dubious of pay companies, do you have any opinions and experiences about such?

This is a great question, as this can be a very tricky situation to navigate. There are a lot of avenues you can take to make money in music now, with the growth of online platforms and the ability to easily and quickly share your music around the world. However, it can still be difficult to make sure you are actually getting the money you deserve. There are a lot of companies out there that will say they will help you get your money, but you need to look very carefully at each one of these to ensure you are choosing the right one.

In addition to that, it can be difficult to get into a publishing company at all. Many companies will not deal with you unless you already have a guaranteed income stream. For example, if someone has already covered your song and it is charting or making money already, the publisher may take you on with the speculation that you will continue writing songs of that quality. If you don’t have that, though, it can be difficult as you have no leverage. You may be writing some really great songs, but these publishers already have thousands of great songs. They want ones that are going to make them money!

I would also advise that you are very careful with what type of contract you sign, and I would have a lawyer review it before you sign anything. I know this can be difficult when you are just starting out and don’t have a lot of extra cash for fees like this, but it is worth it! Some publishers will want you to sign over all publishing rights and all mastering rights, leaving you with just the writer’s credit, which is a big problem because the publisher and the one who owns the masters are the ones that make the money! For example, if a company wants to use your song in a commercial, only the publisher and the owner of the master would be involved in those negotiations and receive any money. Make sure you are negotiating and hold on to at least a small portion of these rights so you can be involved in these processes and actually make money from your song!

In the end though, there really is no get-rich-quick scheme here. Everything in the music industry is about hard work and building great relationships! Focus on creating some really great music and meeting the right people, because this is what you help you move to the next step. Connect with like-minded people and work with them and allow them to mentor you in order to being moving forward in your music career! This is the best way to find success in this crazy industry!
