Up until the 1989 San Marino Grand Prix, the rivalry between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost was relatively calm, although there were occasional intense moments in their battle for victory. The McLaren team was the main adversary for the rest of the grid, and in the previous year they had dominated the competition. In '89, everything seemed to point towards a repeat of their '88 dominance, with both drivers competing for the championship cleanly until the final races. However, all it took was one broken agreement to shatter the peace within the team. The broken promise gave birth to one of the greatest (if not the greatest) rivalries in Formula 1.
