The London Underground is the oldest metro system in the world having opened in 1863. The first lines to open were the sub-surface lines which were originally separate railways and still have many railway-resembling features. The Metropolitan and District lines originally ran steam locomotives hauling wooden passenger coaches in the Underground tunnels in central London. The first electric line opened in 1890 as the first deep-level Underground line which used smaller tube like trains. This smaller design is where the Underground got its popular name, the Tube. The system now consists of 11 lines which cover 402 kilometers of track. The rolling stock is very diverse with a different train on almost every deep-level line and the S stock trains on the sub-surface lines. The livery is iconic to the Tube with red white and blue matching the Underground roundel. Fares are integrated with the rest of the TFL and National Rail network within London. A single ride within zone 1 will cost £2.50 however the price can vary with the length of your journey. The Oyster card is London's transport card which allows you to pay for trips on all TFL services and National Rail within the fare zones. The Underground is one of the best metro systems in the world and is very unique to London. The network is very extensive, with good frequency and reliability. I would certainly recommend anyone in London to use it as it is the best mode of transport around the city. Enjoy the video :)
