Doom II: Perdition's Gate Review/Longplay (UV Pistol-Start All Maps)

If you haven't heard of it before, Perdition's Gate is a classic commercial megawad designed largely by Tom Mustaine and Mackey McCandlish. The wad was offered to Id Software by Mustaine and his team to be used in Final Doom, but was sadly rejected. It was ultimately published by WizardWorks, a company you may have heard of for their famous D!ZONE shovelware level packs. Unlike WizardWorks' typical shovelware fare though, this is an actual high quality level pack that showcases some seriously impressive map design for its time, with its own competently done soundtrack to sweeten the deal. From what I can tell, Perdition's Gate absolutely represents what excellence in Doom mapping was in 1996. Unfortunately, it frontloads most of its interesting content in the first half, with the second half being comprised mostly of short, repurposed deathmatch maps.

I can't help but wonder how much deathmatch play these maps actually saw. They do seem really good, but I wonder how many people actually jumped through the hoops you once had to go through to set Perdition's Gate up specifically. Either way, the quality of this pack is top notch, and the repurposed deathmatch maps reduce the length of this one considerably, making for a quick playthrough. If you think it looks or sounds interesting, give it a try! I promise you won't be disappointed (with the first half.)

This video is a stitched-together compilation of vanilla-compatible single-segment demos of individual levels (with some pausing.) The demos were recorded and are being played back using the Woof! source port. In this run, an OPL-3 chip emulator is used for music playback, for a historically-accurate experience. SNDFIX01.WAD by Coincident was applied for the video recording, for a balanced audio experience.
