Arizona lawmakers are calling for stricter oversight of sex offenders after a convicted predator who violated probation four times allegedly sexually assaulted a 10-year-old girl at a Phoenix elementary school last week.
The case of Abel Gblah has sparked outrage among parents, community leaders and child safety advocates who say the incident exposes serious flaws in how the state monitors sex offenders on probation.
Legislative response planned
Republican state Sen. Janae Shamp joined child safety advocates at Arizona State Capitol on Monday to announce plans for tougher legislation targeting sex offender supervision.
“We’re going to restore accountability and we’re going to restore the principal that protecting children is non negotiable,” Shamp said. “We will pursue reforms tough mandatory responses to violators - public reporting with no secrecy you hurt a child and you do not get to hide any more.”
Shamp said the reforms will be her top priority this legislative session. She plans to introduce bills creating more oversight for sex offenders on probation.
“A system where predators lose rights before children lose safety that’s a system we are going to ensure is in place for every Arizona citizen,” Shamp said.
