April 2016, Nayak Patna, Raghurajpur, Odisha, India – Long before paper was invented documentation and written communication was recorded through engravings or etchings on palm leaves using wooden or metallic stylus with a sharp tip used as a pen. Centuries old teachings and famous mythological stories were originally written on dried and specially cured palm leaves, to be preserved and passed on for future generation. Painstakingly detailed and intricate art work on palm leaf, known as Tala Pattachitra, where characters drawn were mostly based on mythological stories such as Ramayana and Mahabharata, been in existence for the past several hundred years and unfortunately waning due to modernization. In this video we will meet an incredibly talented local artist practicing for over 60 years, through practical demonstrations will enlighten us all the details behind the required etching tools and curing process of the palm leaf and various organic colouring sources that helps to preserve the integrity of the art work on palm leaf over many generations to come.
