A husband who stabbed his wife to death and used his child in a chilling plot to get away with murder has been jailed for a minimum term of 29-and-a-half years.
Robert Rhodes, 52, who refused to attend court for his sentencing hearing, killed his wife Dawn in the kitchen of their family home in 2016 as their marriage crumbled and he had discovered she had been having an affair with a work colleague.
He planned the crime and manipulated their child, who was under the age of 10 at the time, into helping him, then spun a web of lies to pretend he had only inflicted the fatal wound to his wife in self-defence. Rhodes was cleared of murder at an Old Bailey trial in 2017, but he was back in the dock in 2025 after his child went to police to reveal what had really happened.
At Inner London Crown Court on Friday, January 16, Rhodes was jailed for life after being convicted of murder in a rare double jeopardy second trial. At the start of the hearing, Mrs Justice Ellenbogen revealed that Rhodes had refused to leave his prison cell to attend the hearing.
