Labour Day is also known as May Day. It is celebrated every year on 1st of May and declared as national holiday corresponding to the International Workers’ Day (celebrated in many countries all over the world as international labour movement). It was started celebrating annually after the violent strike of labors in 1886 in Chicago, USA urging for eight-hour workday.
The legal establishment of eight-hour day was urged in 1904 in the International Socialist Conference, Amsterdam in the presence of all Social Democratic Party, organizations and trade unions from all countries. It was celebrated first time in India in 1923 in Chennai. Now, it is celebrated annually in India with lots of activities by the organizations and trade unions.
