This comparison focuses purely on medium vans – those with a gross vehicle mass of between 2.5 and 3.5 tonnes – which can all be driven on a regular car licence.

Our field includes two of the segment's big hitters – the top-selling Toyota HiAce and its runner up, the Hyundai iLoad – which together account for roughly half of the medium van sales in Australia.

In fact, for this test we've secured one of the first examples of Toyota's next-generation HiAce, the model representing the first changing of the guard for the nameplate in 15 years.

Then we have three well-established contenders in Ford's Transit Custom, Renault's Trafic and Volkswagen's Transporter, which all attract similar market shares, plus the latest new entrant to the category, Peugeot's Expert.
