Joanna visits with Kristin Hildabrand, Warren County Extension Agent for Horticulture to demonstrate how to make do-it-yourself (DIY) seed tape.
Making seed tape is good for gardeners who are interested in sowing small seeded crops like flowers and vegetables at home. Gardeners can directly place the seed tape into the soil without the worry of seeds blowing away and there is no need to thin out seeds after germination. To make the seed tape, take a roll of toilet paper and cut the toilet paper in half using a pair of scissors. Refer to the back of the seed packet to know how far apart to correctly space the seeds. Place the ruler on the toilet paper and mark the correct spacing for the crop by placing a dot on the paper with the permanent marker. Next, make the glue by mixing 2 tablespoons of flour or cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of water together until a thick paste forms. Add additional water if needed. Dip a toothpick into the glue and place a small amount over the dot on the toilet paper. Then, place individual seeds on the wet glue. Allow the glue to dry and then roll up the seed tape onto the toilet paper roll. Store in the refrigerator until ready to plant in the garden.
