For the most part, when we think about German Shepherds, we see that glorious, fluffy black and tan fur that’s so iconic of the breed. But, did you know that German Shepherds aren’t born with that beautiful multi-tonal coat?
One of the biggest questions we get asked is whether German Shepherds are born black, and how their coats can change color.
In short, yes, the majority of German Shepherd puppies are actually born black, but they can also be born gray and white, as the coats will gradually change color as they grow older.
However, some GSDs that are born with black coats will stay black, but this is incredibly rare, and it is said that only about 6.8% of GSD puppies will maintain this black color into adulthood.
How the coat eventually turns out will depend on how the German Shepherd puppy’s genes interact with pigments such as eumelanin and pheomelanin.
Eumelanin is responsible for the color black, while pheomelanin defaults to red, which can create Red Sable, or deep brown tones and pale gold colors.
German Shepherds can actually be born in three different colors - black, white or gray, and you’ll see the color change from the age of 8 weeks onwards, but it can take up to two years to see the final color.
Black and tan German Shepherds are the most common, and they’ll gradually get more tan as they age, with the browner colors appearing around the face, tail, ears, and stomach as time passes.
In addition, a German Shepherd that is born black can either grow up to be black all over, or they may fade to another color such as Sable, Gray, Black and Tan, Brown, Black and Silver, or other variations.
Even if you have a puppy that has been black for more than 8 weeks, it is very unlikely that it will stay entirely black as it grows, since the majority will turn more Sable colored or Tan as time passes.
If you’re hoping to find yourself a Black German Shepherd, the most promising combination for a black GSD puppy is if both parents of the puppies are black themselves.
However, some black puppies can come from parents that are both black and tan, or if one parent is black and tan, and the other is black. And sometimes it just comes down to luck.
Although they are the same breed, there can be some differences between Black and Tan German Shepherds and Black German Shepherds. For instance, on average, Black German Shepherds tend to be larger, have straighter backs, and thicker coats.
However, Black German Shepherds are no different in terms of temperament or health, but given how rare they are, they can be more expensive, costing upwards of $1000 - $2000 dollars depending on the breeder. DISCLAIMER:
