Golden Doodle Puppy’s FIRST Groom! Early grooming training is important! Read the description!

When you get a puppy (or any new dog):

✅You should start having your puppy (no matter the breed) groomed as soon as they’ve gotten their vaccinations and then at least every four weeks (or every two weeks) for the first few months of their lives to help them learn that grooming is going to be a regular part of their life; your groomer will help train your puppy to learn to be touched all over without fear and to desensitize them to the sights, sounds, smells, and sensations of the grooming environment. After they’re trained for grooming and get past coat change (see below) you and your groomer can establish a schedule that suits your lifestyle and your dog’s coat growth cycle.

✅Your puppy will go through something called “coat change” in their adolescence; their adult coat will grow in and it can look completely different from their puppy coat. When coat change occurs, and if your puppy isn’t regularly groomed, severe and VERY PAINFUL matting can occur and result in a necessary shave down to remove matting, relieve pain, and allow the coat to regrow in healthy. To avoid this, regular professional grooming is required as well as learning how to properly care for your dog’s coat at home in between grooming appointments.

✅Your groomer should be happy to teach you at home coat care (if they won’t, find a new groomer ASAP); avoid groomer hopping if possible and allow your dog to bond with their groomer. It’s a critical relationship in their lives! We are part of the pack!

✅When getting a new dog please remember that that ALL need grooming—even smooth coated dogs like Labs, Rotties, or Pitties! Nails should be trimmed, ideally, every two weeks and no longer than every four weeks, depending on activity level and growth cycle. If their nails touch the floor, they are too long and will, overtime cause foot joint pain and displacement, arthritis, and even hip dysplasia! Ask your groomer to teach you how to do this at home in between appointments!

✅Finally, when considering adding a new puppy or dog to your family, remember that dogs are NOT self-reliant and are NOT low maintenance. Bringing a dog into your life is like deciding to have a baby—they are completely dependent on us to do right by them and to maintain their health and happiness. Before getting any dog, DO YOUR RESEARCH and do a LOT of it!
