The Dodgers were firmly in the National League pennant mix, bolstered by standout performances from Maury Wills and Tommy Davis. Meanwhile, the Mets were navigating their inaugural season, already developing a reputation for lovable futility and looking for stability in their young roster.

The game was defined by early and sustained offensive dominance from Los Angeles. After a quiet first inning, the Dodgers erupted in the second and third, powered by home runs from Willie Davis and Ron Fairly, along with consistent hitting throughout the order. Maury Wills added two home runs—one of them an inside-the-park shot—highlighting a rare power display to complement his baserunning. By the fifth inning, the Dodgers had built a double-digit lead.
