Discription :-The Hot Lotto fraud scandal was a major lottery-rigging scheme in the United States that came to light in 2017. Eddie Raymond Tipton, the former information security director of the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), was found guilty of rigging lottery drawings in multiple states, including Iowa, Colorado, Wisconsin, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Using his privileged access, Tipton installed a rootkit on the random number generator, allowing him to predict winning numbers on specific dates.
The fraud was uncovered when a $14.3 million Hot Lotto prize from December 29, 2010, remained unclaimed for nearly a year. When an anonymous trust from Belize attempted to claim it, the Iowa Lottery rejected the claim. Surveillance footage later revealed that Tipton had purchased the ticket himself, leading to his arrest.
Further investigations exposed that Tipton, his brother Tommy Tipton, and Texas businessman Robert Rhodes had manipulated lottery results for years. Eddie Tipton was sentenced to 25 years in prison but was released on parole in 2022 after serving five years. The scandal raised serious concerns about lottery security, ultimately leading to the shutdown of Hot Lotto in 2017, which was replaced by Lotto America.
