Breast Cancer Mastectomy Reconstruction with High and Hard Breast Implant After

Our patient Gina comes to us after being diagnosed with breast cancer, having both breasts reconstructed after mastectomy, and six weeks after surgery noticing that her left implant and breast did not drop, became firmer, and was diagnosed with left breast capsular contracture also known as capsular contraction.

Whether patients receive breast implants due to cosmetic reasons, or due to breast cancer, resulting in mastectomy and reconstruction, the risk of high, hard, uneven breast implants suffering from capsular contracture is an unfortunate reality.

This patient’s surgeon like many surgeons, recommend surgery to remove the scar tissue possibly replacing the implants but unfortunately this statistically may be very unsuccessful. Statistics show it can result in 70 to 90% failure with capsular contracture only returning afterwards. This failure statistic is increased if the patient has a history of radiation treatment, hematoma, seroma, infection or has other auto immune issues that may increase the likelihood of contracture.
