This is an old hack by Fiz, in which rings and monitors are replaced by hazardous red rings, which instantly kill you (and they have a generous hitbox, too).

I only play through Green Hill Zone because I don't have the patience to play more than this. Several levels are unbeatable, anyway.
Also, there is a bug with the signpost at the end of the levels; after the first one, the life counter is cursed forever.
