When Avani Shah’s family home in Westlands was invaded by auctioneers on 4th November 2023, she first thought that the intruders were sent to kill her. They were after something else, however - the land on School Lane in Westlands, where her father-in-law, Batuk Shah, had held a leasehold title, and where she, her husband and their children had called home.
In this reposted first episode of Title Deals', Africa Uncensored’s Joy Kirigia tells the story of how this incident unfolded, exposing the rot at the national and county Lands offices, where those tasked with overseeing the allocation and custody of land in Kenya appear to act not in the public interest, but against it. As a result, the Shahs and many other Kenyans live in fear, not knowing if the places they call their own, where their entire life savings have been invested, could be snatched from them at a moment’s notice.
