We all know how important it is, that first meet-cute.
For a romance novel or rom-com, it is arguably the make or break component of the entire love story.
Typically, our protagonists become star-crossed at a moment of conflict (if you want your book or movie to sell), and that conflict is complicated by an undeniable physical attraction that is impossible to ignore, try as they might.
Is this love at first sight? Kismet? A fated and pre-destined love story meant to rock the foundations of your very sense of self and identity?
Or rather a state of infatuation, and limerence?
For our purposes here, today, I am going to discussion limerence and infatuation as the same thing: A romantic state of feeling overwhelmingly obsessive and preoccupied, primarily in search of emotional reciprocation, with someone that you have likely idealized beyond reality and reproach.
You can’t stop thinking about them.
You can’t stop yearning for their touch.
You’re counting the seconds until you see them again.
Already, you’re hearing wedding bells in your dreams. The degree of attraction and attention may feel so intense, it might even be considered “love bombing”.
On the body level, we might describe this as an activation of our attachment system, which is made up of our nervous system, limbic brain, and the hormones generated when we feel an intense attraction to someone who lights up our most primitive and early, non-verbal coding for connection and survival.
If you’ve found yourself falling into an infatuated state of limerence before, and struggle to know how and why it happens, you are going to want to watch this video segment.
Because whether or not limerence can lead to long-lasting connection, really depends on two things:
1) Understanding the difference between limerence and abiding affection and regard.
2) The flipping of a few chemical switches in your brain, which lead you through 4 distinct phases, from attraction to long-lasting love and attachment.
And that is just what you will learn, if you stick with me for this 10-minute clip!
