In this tribute post, I share a moment inspired by one of my greatest musical mentors and friends, David Booker (1945–2023), a UK-born bluesman, radio DJ, and Lifetime Achievement Award recipient from the Colorado Blues Society.
Booker introduced me to the music of Rufus Thomas — and we often played Rufus' classics like Walking the Dog and Do the Funky Chicken together in his band. Booker’s encyclopedic knowledge of American R&B and roots music helped shape my musical foundation. His story, like Rufus’, reminds us that music knows no borders.
