Hey everyone, and welcome to my new OCD series and your comprehensive guide to understanding and overcoming Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.
In this foundational Episode 1, I'm diving deep into what OCD 'really' is – and what it isn't! Many people misunderstand OCD as just being "neat" or "quirky," but it's far more complex, distressing, and debilitating.
As a psychologist, I'll explain:
✅ The core components: *obsessions* (unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, urges) and *compulsions* (repetitive behaviors or mental acts).
✅ *The OCD Cycle:* How obsessions lead to anxiety, compulsions provide temporary relief, and ultimately reinforce the cycle (referencing Salkovskis' foundational work).
✅ *The Brain on OCD:* A glimpse into the neurological underpinnings, including overactive "error detection" systems and brain circuits like the orbitofrontal cortex and striatum, and the role of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine.
✅ *The Trap of Avoidance & Suppression:* Why trying to push away or avoid triggers actually strengthens OCD (referencing Daniel Wegner's "white bear" studies and ACT principles from Dr. Russ Harris).
Understanding these fundamentals is the essential first step towards powerful change. This video provides evidence-based insights to help you or someone you know navigate the challenges of OCD.

In Episode 2, we'll explore the gold standard treatment for OCD: Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP).
