Rugezi Marsh Unveiled Full Documentary Film

Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association (RWCA):
RWCA is a non-governmental organisation, with the mission of using home-grown solutions to protect and restore threatened wildlife and wild places. Established to halt the illegal trade of endangered Grey Crowned Cranes in Rwanda, RWCA has now broadened its efforts to other threatened species in Rwanda as well as the important habitats they rely on. RWCA’s strategic areas include species threat reduction, research and monitoring, wildlife interventions, conservation education, community involvement and livelihoods, and restoring and protecting natural habitats.

Rugezi Marsh:
Rugezi Marsh, a Ramsar-protected site located in the north of Rwanda, is renowned for its rich biodiversity and the crucial ecosystem services it provides. This unique wetland area is also a key habitat for many Grey Crowned Cranes. RWCA has been working at Rugezi Marsh, in collaboration with REMA and other stakeholders, since 2015 to strengthen the management and protection of this important area. A team of Community Rangers has been established to patrol the marsh and reduce the number of community members entering the marsh for its natural resources. RWCA has also been working extensively with local communities to improve livelihoods, raise awareness of the need to protect the marsh and provide alternative access to resources.

Rugezi Marsh Biodiversity Survey:
Despite its environmental importance, very little research had been previously undertaken to document the diverse species inhabiting the marsh. Understanding the unique biodiversity across different areas of the marsh can support conservation efforts and contribute to eco-tourism. In 2023, RWCA organised a dedicated team dominated by Rwandan researchers to conduct an extensive biodiversity survey of Rugezi Marsh. The survey documented many taxa, including mammals, insects, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and plants. Our researchers spent several weeks in the field within two phases, meticulously comparing the marsh's biodiversity during both the dry and rainy seasons. Additionally, the project was a great opportunity to strengthen the capacity of Rwandan researchers and showcase what they can achieve.

Key Findings:
This groundbreaking research has led to some remarkable discoveries, with initial findings indicating the presence of new species that had not been previously recorded at Rugezi Marsh. We are excited about the potential impact these findings will have on the conservation of Rugezi Marsh and similar ecosystems.

Documentary Film:
RWCA documented the entire process, including the research journey, challenges, teamwork, and the beauty of Rugezi Marsh, through a documentary film. It will unveil fascinating preliminary findings of this amazing habitat and will support RWCA’s conservation efforts by showcasing the beauty of Rugezi Marsh and its unique species. It will serve as a powerful tool for raising awareness about the importance of protecting this invaluable ecosystem and inspire viewers to take action to preserve it for future generations. RWCA will also be able to use this film in their conservation efforts showing the film in schools near Rugezi Marsh to inspire the next generation of conservationists.
