An immigrant from County Cork, Francis O'Neill was sworn in as a policeman on the Chicago Police Department in 1873. Just a few months later he was shot while apprehending a notorious gangster. The bullet was too close to the spine to be removed, and O’Neill carried it for the rest of his life. O'Neill soon worked his way up through the ranks, eventually obtaining its highest rank as Superintendent, also known as “Chief.”
However, O'Neill is more famous for a rescue, the rescue of Irish music.
