Tension is a concept that is often conflated with suspense, but there is some difference. Tension is more of a feeling that impacts our experience within a single scene, while suspense is more of a big picture occurrence. In this video, various scenes are examined to find the most important elements that make us feel tense. Whether that is the build, the use of silence, the music, the direction, the actors' performances, camera work, or some combination is up to the filmmaker. Some might say these scenes put you on the edge of your seat!
Films studied include No Country for Old Men, Se7en, The Departed, Django Unchained, Inglourious Basterds, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Nocturnal Animals, Prisoners, The Hurt Locker, The Silence of The Lambs, Sicario: Day of The Soldado, Sicario, Wind River, Zero Dark Thirty, and Zodiac. There may be spoilers for parts of these films included.
