🇫🇷 Romain Pilon est l'un des jeunes guitaristes de jazz les plus prometteurs de notre époque, et c'est lors de son passage Berklee College of Music de Boston qu'un certain Metheny l'a repéré, lui offrant la première partie de l'un de ses concerts. Nous avions découvert Romain sur YouTube en tombant sur les vidéos de son trio avec le contrebassiste Jeff Denson et le batteur Brian Blade, qui nous ont amené à écouter ses deux albums "Between Two Worlds" et "Finding Light", des trésors à découvrir absolument. Je l'ai ensuite rencontré en chair et en os à l'occasion d'une interview pour Guitare Xtreme, et je lui ai proposé d'emblée de faire partie de l'aventure Guitare Xtreme Magazine, ce qu'il a accepté sans hésiter. Avec " Don't Call the Police ", Romain n'est pas forcément à l'endroit où nous pourrions l'attendre, avec ce rythme plutôt binaire, assez loin swing inhérent au jazz, et cette mélodie un peu tordue et mystérieuse. Avec un musicien de ce niveau-là, on ne tergiverse pas, et une fois en studio, après seulement une courte répétition avec Davy Honnet (batterie) et Bruno Ramos (basse), Arnaud Bascuñana a pu faire tourner la bande et obtenir quelques très bonnes prises. Tout se base ici sur l'écoute et l'intention, le poids des notes… Nous sommes dans de la gastronomie musicale. Il ne nous a pas fallu bien longtemps pour choisir la version que nous allions converser, et qui tournait un tout petit mieux que les autres. Quant au solo de Romain, il était parfait sur chaque version, explorant des cheminements tout aussi intéressants à chaque fois. Marwan Boulaïd, présent au studio ce jour-là, a posé son solo dans la foulée, toujours aussi créatif et inspiré, et Jean-Marie Ecay a fait le siens un mois plus tard, lorsque nous avons pu recaler la fameuse session de " Plug-in " lorsque sa blessure à la main a été guérie. L'un des morceaux les plus singulier du répertoire de United Guitars signé par un artiste que l'on est impatient de voir évoluer dans les années à venir et qui pourrait bien se faire une place parmi les plus grands guitaristes de jazz de notre temps.

🇬🇧 Romain Pilon is one of the most promising young jazz guitar player of our time, and it was during his time at the Boston Berklee College of Music in Boston that a certain Metheny spotted him, offering him the opening act for one of his concerts. We discovered Romain on YouTube when we came across a video of his trio with Jeff Denson (upright bass) and Brian Blade (drums), which led us to listen to his two albums "Between Two Worlds" and "Finding Light", treasures that are absolutely worth discovering. I then met him in person during an interview for Guitare Xtreme Magazine, and I immediately suggested that he be part of the United Guitars adventure, which he accepted without hesitation. With "Don't Call the Police", Romain is not necessarily where we might expect him to be, with this rather binary rhythm, quite far from the swing inherent in jazz, and this slightly twisted and mysterious melody. With a musician of this level, there is no procrastination, and once in the studio, after only a short rehearsal with Davy Honnet (drums) and Bruno Ramos (bass), Arnaud Bascuñana was able to roll the tape and get some very good takes. Everything here is based on listening and intention, the weight of the notes… We are in musical gastronomy. Marwan Boulaïd laid down his solo immediately, always as creative and inspired, and Jean-Marie Ecay did his a month later, when we were able to reschedule the famous "Plug-in" session when his hand injury was healed. One of the most unique pieces in the United Guitars repertoire, signed by an artist that we are impatient to see evolve in the years to come and who could well make a place for himself among the greatest jazz guitarists of our time.
