CAEL Speaking Task 3: Describing a visual. Sample Answer.
The chart reflects the findings of a Canadian study into the impact that various occupations can have on sleep. The times, over a twenty-four hour period, are shown in two-hour increments on the vertical axis, while the occupations are shown on the horizontal axis.
Overall, the work requirements of the different occupations have a profound effect on when, and for how long, a person sleeps.
Housewives experience the most disturbed sleep with only two hours of sleep intermittently throughout most of the night and much of the day. Their longest period of alertness is between 4 and 10pm.
The sleep patterns of the remaining occupations is much less disrupted with entrepreneurs and students sharing similar night-time sleep patterns. Both groups go to bed at midnight, but the former gets up at 6am, while the latter wakes up at 8am. Taxi drivers and nurses share similar daytime schedules sleeping between 10pm and 4pm, although taxi drivers get an extra couple of hours in the morning between 4am and 6am.
In conclusion, being a housewife has the greatest impact on sleep duration, but there is some compensation in that they are able to sleep for a full four hours more than the other occupations shown.
