Beginners lip balm with Kelly @gentleselfcarestudio. Will make 4 x 15g tubes of firm lip balm.
Ingredients:
30g beeswax
25g shea butter
15g cocoa butter
8g olive squalane
Equipment:
Double boiler
Stove top
Thermometer
Scale that is sensitive to milligrams (gives greater accuracy than scales that only provide grams)
Paper towels (you can weigh out solid ingredients on these instead of little bowls)
Isocol spray bottle
Something to mix the melted ingredients - I used disposable wooden cutlery in this video
Lip balm tubes. I've used 15g ones, but you can use any size and type. This balm is firmer so more suitable for tubes.
Ensure all equipment has been sterilised before using
Method
1. Weigh out all ingredients
2. Place water in the base of the double boiler (less than half way) and turn on the stove top.
3. Place ingredients in the pot of the double boiler and melt. Make sure any water that is bubbling in the base doesn't get into the pot. Turn heat down if necessary.
4. Stir a few times to help the ingredients melt.
5. Check the temperature with the thermometer and once at 70 degrees, remove the pot from the heat. If it goes over 70 degrees by a bit, it's okay, but just make sure it's at or below 70 degrees when you pour into the tubes.
6. Pour the liquid into the tubes up to the brim and then place lid on. Place somewhere out of the way to let them set for a few hours. I live in a warm climate so it takes longer. You could place in the fridge to set quicker if you want to.
7. Clean and sterilise your equipment
Note: At the publishing date of this video, I didn't receive any benefits from the product suppliers I used. I live in Western Australia, so use local businesses wherever possible. Aussie Soap Supplies is the business I have sourced from, but I encourage you to source from your own local supplier.
