Horseshoe Lake & the hidden waterfalls
Growing up just south of Loon Lake, Horseshoe Lake was always just a quick jaunt away — a back-road drive through forests and farmland that led to some of my favorite childhood memories. From fishing the lake, to hunting, to hiking the valleys south of the water, this area has always felt a little magical to me.
What always fascinated me most were the hidden ponds, the wild rock formations, and the quiet relics of old farm life tucked into the landscape. And then there’s the lake itself — those calm, glassy waters paired with the sprawling waterfalls on the northeast corner. If you know, you know… and if you’ve ever kayaked there in the summer, you really know how special it is.
This last Sunday, Suzy and I took a little drive up to the public boat launch at Horseshoe Lake so I could send my drone up and capture the scenery from above. And honestly… seeing it from the sky made me appreciate just how incredibly unique this place really is.
To the north, there’s a massive rock outcropping that almost looks like a natural retaining wall, separating one valley from another. One valley stretches off to the northwest, gently meandering with a creek that winds its way into the lake. The other sends its creek cascading down a set of beautiful falls before joining the water below. From the air, it’s absolutely breathtaking.
I put together a full 4K drone video of the flight around the lake, and I’d really love for you to check it out on my YouTube channel, Creek House Studios. If you enjoy local scenery, hidden gems, and a little piece of Pacific Northwest magic, I think you’ll love this one.
