There are various types of brachial plexus injuries, and they can be so different that they might seem like entirely different conditions!!!
Which is worse? An avulsion or a partial injury? They are extremely different...
This is due to the differences in pain, sensitivity, and range of motion.
One thing they all have in common is... If the patient receives the correct and timely treatment, their chances of improvement increase significantly!
This applies to both complete and partial injuries of C5 and C6!
The main types of brachial plexus injuries include:
Brachial Plexus Stretch Injury: This occurs when a brachial plexus nerve is slightly stretched, damaging the protective covering of the nerve. This causes problems with nerve signal conduction but does not always result in nerve damage. It can heal on its own or require simple treatment methods, such as physical therapy, to return to normal function.
Brachial Plexus Rupture: This happens when a stronger stretch of a brachial plexus nerve causes it to rupture. These types of injuries need to be repaired with surgery.
Brachial Plexus Root Avulsion: This is the most severe type of brachial plexus injury. It occurs when the nerve root is torn away from the spinal cord. These types of injuries require surgery to recover function.
So, did you understand the different types of brachial plexus injuries? These injuries can range from a mild stretch of a few roots to a complete avulsion of the entire brachial plexus (the most severe of all).
