Reddit has filed a lawsuit against Australia's new law banning social media access for users under 16, arguing it violates free political expression.
The law, which is the first of its kind globally, requires platforms like Reddit, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok to block underage users or face hefty fines.
The US-listed firm, which operates in Australia, called the ban "invalid on the ground that it infringes the implied freedom of political communication", according to a court filing signed by its lawyers, Perry Herzfeld and Jackson Wherrett.
While the government stands ready to defend its legislation, the case highlights major privacy and expression concerns for internet users.
Reddit's legal action is separate from another ongoing High Court challenge filed by two teenagers.
With age verification measures in place, the outcome of these legal battles could shape global digital policy.
