Gurdjieff - His Life and Teaching

This is Part 1 of "The Seekers of Truth" made by Jean-Claude Lubtchansky, a close associate of Madame de Salzmann, with the support of the Gurdjieff Institute in France. The film covers the basis of Gurdjief's teaching in his own words.

George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff was born in 1867 in Gyumri, Armenia (formerly known as Alexandropol). His father Ivan was Greek and his mother Yeva Armenian. From an early age he set out in search of knowledge that he believed had been known to man in the past, but had been forgotten. He visited various holy places in Tibet, India, Egypt and also various monasteries in Asia.

What he discovered is set out in a book called In Search of the Miraculous, which was written by one of his pupils Piotr Ouspensky. The essential message is that people – that means you and me and others - are not conscious of themselves, but are effectively asleep. People are caught in a circle of daydreams and worries – but Gurdjieff said it is possible to wake up in order to sense that we are actually alive.

As well as composing music and teaching temple dances to his pupils, which have since become known as “the Gurdjieff movements,” he wrote three books: Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson; Meetings with Remarkable Men; and Life is Only Real, Then, When ‘I am’.

Gurdjieff died in Paris on 29 October 1949 and since then many people have latched on to his teaching to spread in their own way what he tried to bring for the benefit of those who wish to wake up and in so doing enrich the quality of their lives on a daily basis.

An aphorism was hung in the hall where Gurdjeff taught his pupils which stated: “Here there are neither Russians nor English, Jews nor Christians, but only those who pursue one aim: to be able to be."
