Sometimes the best strikes happen when you least expect them. This fish hit my jig as I was reeling up against a strong underwater current.

Slow pitch jigging doesn’t always go as planned, and that’s part of the fun. While winding my jig back through the current, a bonito came in and hit hard. Even though they are not the most sought-after fish in vertical jigging, their fast runs and steady pulls make them enjoyable to catch. Bonitos are known for quick strikes and constant action, keeping the fight exciting from the initial strike to the moment the fish is gaffed.
Bonitos are a common catch when jigging in Australia, Japan, the Mediterranean, Florida, and Southeast Asia, and they’re often kept as bait for bigger fish. While they may not be the main target, their fast, hard-hitting strikes make every fight a fun vertical jigging experience.
⭐Did you know?
➡️Bonitos are close relatives of tuna and mackerel.
➡️They can swim up to 40 mph when chasing bait.
➡️Many anglers use them as bait for bigger fish like GT, kingfish, marlin, or dogtooth tuna.
If you’re into slow pitch jigging, offshore fishing, or just enjoy the surprise of a strike, this one’s for you.
