淨界法師：佈施持戒不是爲了貪求人天福報

所以斷惡修善，不能當終極目標，只能當過程。你把斷惡當終極目標，那你就把人生都皈依在人天果報，那你情何以堪呢？那你就每一生都在受傷。所以佛陀就跟你講：我再講第二個更高檔次的教理——「諸行無常，諸法無我，涅槃寂靜」。佛陀說：一個人只有安住涅槃，才是真正的快樂，三界沒有快樂。

你那個善業，你佈施持戒，你把它換成人天果報，你今生享受完了，到下一個果報你帶不出去，你多生那麼辛苦地持戒，今生就把它花完了，你不覺得很可惜嗎？搞不好，花完的過程你還沾滿了貪瞋癡的煩惱，後遺症一大堆。所以佛陀說：造善是沒有錯的，關鍵是你怎麼樣把它迴向淨土，迴向無上菩提，你可以做一些更高級的轉換。

諸位要知道，「諸行無常，諸法無我，涅槃寂靜」，不是否定你造善，而是告訴你不要貪求人天果報。你造的善業，你不要那麼小家子氣，去換一個糖果吃，你可以換摩尼寶珠。你說：「欸，這摩尼寶珠要等很久。」等就等，是不是？但是你得了摩尼寶珠可以一勞永逸。你老是換糖果吃，生死都不出離，那你什麼時候是個頭呢？

Master emphasizes that simply focusing on avoiding evil and doing good deeds should not be the ultimate goal of one's spiritual journey; rather, it should be seen as part of a broader process. If one treats the accumulation of good deeds as the final aim, it means that they are merely seeking the rewards of human and celestial realms, which are temporary and limited. Buddha teaches that true happiness lies in the realization of the impermanence of all things, the absence of a permanent self, and the peace of Nirvana.

The passage further explains that if one uses their good karma—such as through acts of generosity and moral discipline—to merely enjoy worldly rewards in this life, all the effort put into accumulating that merit will be used up and won't carry over to future lives. This can be wasteful and may even result in additional attachments and suffering due to greed, anger, and ignorance. Therefore, while it is important to perform good deeds, the key is to dedicate these merits toward the attainment of the Pure Land or the supreme enlightenment of Buddhahood, which represents a higher and more lasting transformation.

The teachings of impermanence, selflessness, and the tranquility of Nirvana are not meant to discourage the practice of good deeds but to prevent one from being overly attached to the fleeting rewards of the human and heavenly realms. Instead of exchanging your good deeds for something as transient as a "piece of candy," you are encouraged to aim for the "wish-fulfilling jewel"—a metaphor for achieving ultimate liberation. Though it may require patience, attaining this higher goal is infinitely more rewarding and provides lasting peace. Continually seeking temporary pleasures through good deeds without aiming for liberation will only keep one trapped in the cycle of birth and death without an end in sight.
